To be eligible for this scholarship, applicants must be admitted to the University of Iowa and have:

• A 3.80 cumulative high school grade-point average (on a 4.00 scale); and
• An ACT composite score of 30 (or a combined SAT critical reading and math score of 1330) or higher.

If applicants plan to take the ACT or SAT during fall 2012, University strongly advise candidates to select from the September, October, or November test dates.

December ACT or SAT results may not be available in time for this scholarship competition.

Completed scholarship applications (parts A–E) must be postmarked by Dec. 7, 2012. Additional application forms can be downloaded at here.

In addition to submitting the Presidential Scholarship application and supporting written materials, you must be admitted to the university (admissions.uiowa.edu/apply). Your 8-digit university ID number is located on your Admissions Profile which you can access via ISIS.

Applicants name and university ID number should appear at the top of each page. Clearly label each document as Personal Essay, Presidential Scholarship Letter of Recommendation, and list of activities. Use white paper and a legible font no smaller than 11-point for all writing components. To expedite review of applicants application, submit only single-sided documents with no staples.

The essay is particularly important in the scoring and is applicant best opportunity to distinguish themself from other applicants. Be insightful and creative in addressing the topic, use their best writing skills, and proofread carefully. The length of your essay should be 750 to 1,000 words.

The topic is: Presidential Scholars are widely known to possess a strong sense of intellectual curiosity. Tell about an idea or an experience applicants have had that they found intellectually engaging. Describe specifically how the idea or experience engaged and affected them, as well as its significance.

A Presidential Scholarship selection committee composed of faculty and staff members selects the scholarship recipients. Selection criteria for the award include exceptional academic ability; integrity in scholarship, service, and leadership; intellectual curiosity; commitment to community; and respect for difference.
