USTC Stalemate Makes 5,000 Students Fates Uncertain

USTC stalemate continues

Nearly two months after the crisis, the authorities of the University of Science and Technology Chittagong (USTC) have yet to take any mentionable steps to bring normalcy to academic activities.

Since May 18, the USTC teachers, employees and students went on a four-hour work abstention program demanding that the authorities concerned ensure transparency in the appointment of its Vice-Chancellor and implement the service rules.

Due to the strike, more than 5,000 students of the university have been passing their days amid great uncertainty regarding the future of their education.

Sources said the authorities have yet to take any preparations for the medical faculty students' professional examination that is set to be held on July 31.

Meanwhile, the local deputy commissioner and local distinguished persons held separate meetings with the agitating group and the USTC authorities to stop the deadlock. However, these initiatives provided no results.

A tripartite meeting was held at Circuit House in the city on July 19 regarding the staffs' demands, where Chittagong DC Mesbah Uddin and the demonstrators' representative Dr Nina Islam, also a member secretary of the USTC Board of Trustees, were present.

Account BenefitWhen asked about the meeting, Nina told the Dhaka Tribune that the Board of Trustees had agreed to pay the salary of June as well as the Eid bonuses but the promise has yet to see light.

"If the professional examination is missed, the medical students will have to face at least six months of session jam", she added.

Kamrul Islam Bappy, a 7th semester student of the CSE department, said: "Although the semester final examination was scheduled to be held in July, but the ongoing deadlock has hampered it".

Imtiaz Emu, a 6th semester student of the EEE department, said their examination and the viva-voce of the semester final remained stuck due to the strike.

Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology VC Dr Jahangir Alam, who was a member of the USTC syndicate, said both the authorities concerned and the agitators have to reach a consensus for the sake of the students' future.
