Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid has warned the private universities owners to stop certificate business without teaching.

He came up with the warning while addressing the inaugural ceremony of North East University held at Sylhet Jalalabad Gas Bhaban auditorium Saturday.

With North East University Trusty Board chairman advocate Iqbal Ahmad Chowdhury in the chair, vice-chancellor of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) professor Saleh Uddin Ahmed, vice-chancellor of Sylhet Agricultural University professor Dr. Shahid Ullah Talukder, former vice chancellor of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology Professor Dr. Sadaruddin Ahmed Chowdhury, Bar Council member advocate Mishbah Uddin Siraj, Shafiqur Rahman Chowdhury MP and others were present in the ceremony.

The education minister said that the education system in the private universities would not be allowed to become merely certificate oriented.

"There're many sectors to do business and make profits. It will not be allowed to use education as a business tool," – Nahid said.

"No matter how influential the owners of the private universities become, they have to run the universities in compliance with the rules."

The minister also said that he had received threats before placing the Private University Bill–2010 (Amended) in parliament.
