President Zillur Rahman, also the chancellor of the universities asked authorities of all universities to take steps to increase seat numbers in the universities to create higher education opportunities for all meritorious students passing out from secondary level.

"It is must to put highest priority in ensuring quality education and expansion of research in higher education level," he said while presiding over 14th convocation of Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (BICC) on September 20, 2012.

"It is a demand of time to ensure all facilities of higher education including permanent campus, library and laboratories, full time teachers and modern information technology at all private universities," said president.

Noting that the universities are the main centre of building nation, the President said it would have to be ensured collectively that the country's private universities are not profit making bodies.

He said the present government has put highest priority on education and declared 'National Education Policy-2010' to build science and IT oriented open minded educated society.

Referring to 'Vision-2021' declared by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to build an IT and knowledge-based prosperous Bangladesh, the President expressed his belief that the young generation would advance the vision to its goal.

He urged the young generation to contribute in nation building process imbued with patriotism realizing the struggle and glorious history of 'Bangalees'.

Congratulating the new graduates, the President urged the students to pay back their debt to their family, society and the state by their talent, knowledge and work.

During the convocation, a total of 934 students were conferred graduate and undergraduate degrees from different disciplines. Four students - Raisa Rasheeka, Rafid Haider, M Saiful Islam and S M Saiful Islam received gold medals from the President for their outstanding academic results.

Member of Parliament and noted cultural personality Asaduzzaman Noor spoke as convocation speaker while Raisa Rasheeka as valedictorian. IUB trustee board chairman Towhid Samad and Vice Chancellor Professor M Omar Rahman also spoke on the occasion.
