BUET Teachers Returning Classes

BUET teachers on September 4, 2012 called off their demonstrations and will return to classes on assurances from the Education Minister, but the students have refused to concede until Vice-Chancellor SM Nazrul Islam is removed.

BUET teachers decided this after Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid assured them of removing the Pro-Vice Chancellor and withdrawing cases filed against the teacher and students. The decision on the VC, however, remains pending.

Nahid met the BUET Teachers' Association leaders on September 3. 2012 midnight in an emergency meeting in an apparent bid to thrash out a solution to the crisis roiling the institution and persuaded them to change their mind on taking classes.

The meeting began around 11:15 pm at the official residence of minister at the Minto Road.

However, agitating students of BUET on September 3, 2012 expressed their dissatisfaction over the assurance of education minister of withdrawing only the pro-vice-chancellor as they want resignation of both the VC and his deputy.

The agitating students said they were not satisfied with the minister's assurance since they feel insecure under present VC SM Nazrul Islam.

Meanwhile, Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid is set to hold a meeting with the representatives of the demonstrating students on September 5, 2012 to resolve the ongoing crisis of BUET.

The meeting is scheduled to be held at 4:00 pm at the secretariat in the capital.
