UGC Worried About at Public Varsities

Bangladesh University Grants Commission (UGC) has expressed deep concern over the recent incidents in some public universities in the country.
The UGC in a meeting expressed the concern over the prevailing crisis at several public universities including Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), Jahangirnagar University (JU), Pabna University of Science and Technology (PUST) and Rajshahi University (RU).
The meeting was chaired by UGC chairman Professor Dr. AK Azad Chowdhury.
The deadlock in academic activities at BUET, JU, PUST and RU is hampering overall higher education in the country, the commission observed.
The UGC said, it wants a responsible role by the students and teachers, university administrations, local administration and
political leaders to resolve the crisis.
The commission said in the meeting that,the stalemate in the public universities is not expected as the number their students
has exceeded 22 lakh which is next to China, India and Indonesia.
Meanwhile, a three-member committee has been formed in the meeting headed by UGC member Professor Dr. Mohammad Mohabbat Khan as the convener. The Committee has been formed to inspect the prevailing situation of the universities and to extend assistance to the University administration.
The other members of the committee are UGC member Professor Dr. M Akhter Hossain and UGC deputy secretary Ferdous Zaman (member secretary).
The activities of the committee would begin within a couple of days.
