Professor Shariff Enamul Kabir tops in the VC panel election of Jahangirnagar University (JU) getting highest 50 votes on July 20, 2012. Besides, incumbent JU VC Prof Anwar Hossain, got 38 votes and Prof Nurul Alam was elected with 37 votes. Among the 68 senate members 63 cast their votes while five members refrained from voting.
According to the Jahangirnagar University Act, one member can vote for thee nominees.
The elections were held at the senate conference room of the university at 10am amid opposition by a group of teachers and senate members. Earlier a large number of policemen were deployed on the campus and water cannons were also kept ready.
Six registered graduate senate members led by former Vice President of Jahangirnagar University Central Students' Union (JUCSU) Ashrafuddin Khan walked out by boycotting the polls soon after the senate session started.
"We don't want a one-sided election. We want fair polls with participation of all quarters," he said.
Meanwhile, Sammilito Shikkhak Parishad has announced to observe the day as a 'Black Day' every year terming the elections 'controversial'.
President Zillur Rahman will select the JU VC after the submission of three top panels.
JU Registrar announced the election results at 1:30pm at Senate Hall of the administration building.
