Construct Barisal University on Govt. Land - Local People

Local people of Barisal Sadar upazila Sunday afternoon formed a human chain stretching two kilometers on Barisal-Patuakhali highway demanding construction of Barisal University on government land. Many people will be homeless if the construction project of Barisal University is implemented on private land, they claimed.

The protest programme was held on Shaheed Abdur Rob Serniabad (Dapdapia) bridge. Speakers at the human chain said if the government wants to construct the university on private land it will have to spend a huge amount to acquire land.

They also claimed that education minister Nurul Islam Nahid accompanied by the administrative officials and local AL lawmakers and leaders visited Karnakati area on October 26, 2009 and ordered to establish Barisal University only on 200 acres of public land available in the same area without affecting the private land owners.

However, 50 acres of private land recently marked by the district administration for acquisition to implement first phase of Barisal University Project at Karnakati mouza of Barisal Sadar upazila on eastern Bank of Kirtankhola River.

Affected land owners alleged administration with ill motive has selected the private land instead of 200 acres of government land under the mouza.

Demand for university was first made at 1960 before independence of Bangaladesh. At 1973, then Prime Minister Sheikh Mujibur Rahman declared to establish a university in Barisal during a rally held the city. President Ziaur Rahman made a similar statement of establishing a university in Barisal as well in November 23, 1978 whiles he was attending a rally in Barisal Circuit House.

After three decades, upon strong demandes from people of Barisal, finally the proposal was passed in ECNEC at November 29, 2008 by then Caretaker Government and at 22 November 2011 Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the construction of building of the university. The educational activities were inaugurated by Minister for education Nurul Islam at 25 January 2012 in a temporary campus in Barisal Zilla School.

Main Campus construction is scheduled to finish at 2013 at Karnakati on the eastern bank of the Kirtonkhola river in Sadar upazila. Tk 90 core will be used to construct the university on 50 acres of land, including 12 acres of private and 38 acres public land.

In academic year 2011-2012 around 400 students are enrolled in six majors under four disciplines.
