BU Holds Seminar on Child Marriage in Bangladesh

BU seminar on child marriage

The Department of Law of Bangladesh University (BU) organizes a seminar on the issue of child marriage, a burning problem of our country December 17, 2016 at its Auditorium.

Ms. Nurun Naher Osmani, Member, National Human Rights Commission Bangladesh, will grace the occasion as the Chief Guest. Ms. Taslima Yasmin, Assistant Professor, Department of Law, University of Dhaka presents the key note paper titled: 'Child Marriage in Bangladesh: Recent Developments' followed by a panel discussion.

Among others distinguished panelists including Mr. Nur Khan Liton, Executive Director, Ain O Salish Kendra (ASK), Mr. Mohammad Bellal Hosain, Associate Professor, Department of Population Sciences, University of Dhaka, Ms. Rowshon Ara, Project Director, Naripokhkho, Ms. Nina Goswami, Senior Deputy Director, Ain O Salish Kendra (ASK), and Ms. Mitali Jahan, Project Manager, Bangladesh National Woman Lawyer's Association (BNWLA) spoke on the occasion.

Secretary, BoT, BU Engr. MA Ghulam Dastagir presided over the seminar. The session was moderated by Professor. Dr. Mohammad Nazmuzzaman Bhuian, honorable Advisor, Department of law of Bangladesh University.

Account BenefitSpeakers said, both positive and negative aspects of the proposed law were highlighted by the Keynote Speaker. The panelists thanked the government as the government has finally come to realize the practical necessity to enact such Act and have praised all the positive aspects of the proposed new law. But they have criticized the provision initiated by the government to marry off the female children below the prescribed age limit of 18 years in extreme circumstances by their parents especially in the rural areas of Bangladesh.

Deans of different Faculties, Heads of different Departments, teachers of the Department of Law and a huge number of law students of Bangladesh University were present in the seminar. The Session was followed by an Open Discussion and Questions-Answer Session for the Law-Students.
