Abolishing MCQ from public exams

Noted educationists, rights activists, economists and engineers on May 26, 2016 proposed withdrawing of multiple choice question (MCQ) method, making education curriculum easier.

The educationists made the propositions at view-exchange meeting chaired by Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid. The speakers also proposed stopping coaching and guide book business, making subject-wise question banks and increasing costs in education sector.

"I myself cannot realize many things in science books of Class IX… how a student can realize those. Curriculum of secondary education should be made easier and understandable", noted educationist Professor Zafar Iqbal told the view-exchange on "responsibilities to enhance quality of secondary education" organized by Education Ministry at CIRDAP auditorium in city.

Suggesting removing the MCQ method and imposing a ban on guide books, he said more efficient teachers should be given the task of making questions for public examinations.

Presided over by Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid, Educationist and Founder of Bishwa Sahitya Kendro Professor Abdullah Abu Sayeed, Economist Dr. Qazi Kholiquzzaman Ahmad, human rights activist Sultana Kamal, former governor of Bangladesh Bank Dr. Mohammad Farasuddin, Educationist Rasheda K. Chowdhury and Engineer Rezaul Karim and BRAC Official Mostaq Ahmed, among others, addressed the function.

Account BenefitProfessor Abu Sayeed underscored the need for forming a committee which will suggest how the quality of education can be enhanced. He also suggested creating subject-wise question banks to make effective the creative method of education.

"Our teachers cannot make standard 'creative questions' and that is why this method doesn't bring benefits", he said. Dr. Kholiquzzaman said though the allocation for the education sector in the national budget is increasing every year, it is declining in terms of GDP (gross domestic product) rate constantly.

Nurul Islam Nahid said all suggestions and proposals have been taken into cognizance. "A committee would be formed to examine the proposals and suggestions from coming from the noted personalities," he said.
