The Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid hopes that in the next five years 20 percent students in Bangladesh will choose vocational education.

Nurul Islam Nahid stated this at the inauguration of a job fair at Dhaka Mohila Polytechnic Institute at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar on April 01, 2016 (Friday).

"The Awami League government brought in 'groundbreaking changes' in the spheres of vocational education. The percentage of students enrolling into vocational education has increased to 13.11 percent from 1.2 percent in 2008. By 2020, this will increase to 20 percent or more", said Nahid.

Nahid said vocational education would empower the youths to become self-employed and pointed out that no-one has remained unemployed after receiving work-related qualification. "They will get jobs right after completing their studies. If they can acquire proper skills then they will not have to go for job hunting. Jobs will come to them", he added.

Account BenefitOver 1.5 million students currently study in public and private vocational institutions in Bangladesh. The government is planning to set up 23 'international-standard' polytechnic institutes and at least one vocational institute in every Upazila.

The minister added that the government's effort was on to increase participation of women in vocational trainings. One women polytechnic institute has been set up in each of four divisional cities, the minister said.

The minister said 20 percent seats in the polytechnic institutes are reserved for female students and that all the female polytechnic students get government scholarship.
