Lack of proper maintenance and renovation work for a long time has put at least 5 buildings, including some dormitories, at the Jagannath University (JU) at risk of collapse.

Risking their life, the students have been attending classes at the vulnerable buildings - Science Building, Administrative Building, New Academic Building and Arts Building - but the authorities remain indifferent.

Several cracks gaped in walls and roofs in most rooms at the halls and chunks of plaster fell very often, sending panic among the students. Water leaks into the room from the top floor and patches of damp appear in the walls during rainy season while sewer water often leaks from pipelines, submerging the toilets as well as nearby rooms.

Some repair works such as plastering the gaping cracks and spraying coal tar on the roof were carried out at the Administrative Building for continuing the administrative works.

The other vulnerable buildings are the engineering office, laboratory, some classrooms of biochemistry and molecular science and zoology departments, auditorium, gymnasium and the TSC.

Account Benefit"Accidents may take place at any time as most of the buildings were built without soil test and pilings", said a student of Jagannath University, requesting anonymity. The amount needed for maintenance often go to other sector, especially salary, due to lack of funds.

The Vice-Chancellor of JnU Professor Dr. Mizanur Rahman said about these buildings, "Jagannath College was made University without any new buildings. Old buildings are being older. It will take a long time for constructing new buildings through breaking the risky old buildings unworthy renovation."

The VC said expressing his dissatisfaction, "There is also another way. Construct new buildings through closing all the activities of the university for a few years from now and reopen after completing the construction. There will be no risk if it is possible."
