More Than 250 Students of Titumir College Living in Danger

Half of the students of a dormitory of Government Titumir College in the city are living with risks due to the college administration not taking any alternative measures.

The college administration on 2nd October 2015, has declared the 50 percent rooms of the dormitory 'Akkasur Rahman Akhi' as risky after the ceiling collapse in 212 number room.

The students are not willing to leave the hostel, because this is the only male dormitory of the college. Students are living in all the risky rooms. No one leave the room due to not having any alternative arrangements, said Mizanur Rahman, a resident student of 213 no. room.

The college authorities announced 21 rooms as risky including that room. There are more rooms on the ground floor- 104, 105, 106, 108 and 109, on second floor- 202, 205, 206, 208, 209, 211, 212 and 217 and on the third floor- 301, 302, 303, 305, 307, 309 319 number rooms are risky.

The Principal of Titumir College Professor Abu Haider Ahmed Naser could not tell when the reformation of the rooms will start. He said, this is a matter of the government, they complete tender process, and then the repairing will start.

Account BenefitThere are only three dormitories for 55 thousands students of Govt. Titumir College. Among them, two of the dormitories allocated to provide accommodation for female students, one of which is in the college campus, and the other one is in Banani.

There are a total of 188 student's accommodation facilities in the 46 rooms of Akkasur Rahman Akhi Hall for Titumir College students since 1983. But, almost 500 students are living there. Accordingly, nearly 250 students are in the risks, said the resident students of that hall.

Principal Professor Abu Haider said, "Chief Engineer (Chief Engineer of the Department of Education Engineering) has visited the dormitory. He announced as risky, and I gave notice to vacate the dormitory. What can I do if the students not leaving the rooms?"

Chief Engineer of the Department of Education Engineering Dewan Md. Hanzala said, "Renovation work has been started for the rooms identified as risky. Renovation work has begun, and then the students can live in those rooms."
