Big crisis in nursing education

The number of nursing colleges and institutes in public and private sector has exceeded 100. But the posts of teachers were not growing.

The education is running in difficulties with 63 percent of vacant posts. Each year, three thousand nurses passed out only from the public sector nursing colleges and institutes, but there is still the question about their ability.

The government on 12th July 2009 formulated the policies related private sector nursing college/nursing institutions establishment and starting nursing courses.

The policy has the obligation to appoint full-time thematic nurses, teachers and staffs. Nursing Council and Health Department officials have confirmed that there is no application of the principles in any institution at government or private sector.

Officials of at least 10 nursing colleges and institutes of the country said, they are struggling to run their organizations. They are tired of sending letters to the ministry for teaches recruitment. They are depending on the guest teachers and hospital nurses to meet the crisis.

Former director of Dhaka Medical College Hospital Shahidul Haque Mallik said, nurses have the responsibility to tell physicians about the patient's physical condition. But the effect of errors in education system is being felt deeply. Their activities in the ward are often frustrating.

Account BenefitThere are 123 nursing colleges and institutes in the country. 232 out of total 366 posts are now vacant in the 53 institutions of public sector. The nursing education in Bangladesh is continuing on the policy of 1977.

At the time, the number of educational institutions increases and the curriculum has been well-fed. But no initiative was taken to increase the teacher's posts through reforming the policy. There are no opportunities for nurses to get higher education.

Acting Director of Health Department Nilofar Forhad said the problem is identified. The problem will be solved after implementing the new recruitment policy. However the new recruitment policy has been stacked in the ministry for more than a year.

Joint Secretary General of Bangladesh Diploma Nurses Association Md. Asadujjaman blamed the lack of vision of state government and disunity in nurse leaders.
