Nine Private Universities Operating Illegal Outer Campuses

There are 83 private universities in the country based on the documents. 5 universities out of them could not start the education activities yet.

In addition, 9 private universities are operating the educational activities in multiple campuses without any permission of the government.

Allegedly these universities are operating the educational activities in multiple illegal campuses by taking the court stay order instead of taking the governments permission.

And the Bangladesh Army has 3 private universities among the 5 that could not start the educational activities. The other two are: Global University and Times University. This information was revealed in a report of Bangladesh University Grants Commission (UGC).

According to the UGC's decision, every outer campus of private university is illegal. But some private universities are running their outer campuses illegally by neglecting the decision of UGC.

Earlier, the University Grants Commission (UGC), the apex monitoring body of the higher education in the country, has published a list of 56 private universities or local campuses of foreign universities illegally operating in the country.

As a result, some 12,000 students studying at these universities are now facing serious uncertainty about their academic future. The UGC sources said these 56 local and foreign universities have been operating their academic activities without the prior approval of the UGC.

Since these universities have been running illegally, the UGC has informed all concerned that according to the Section 6 of the Private University Act 1992 and the Private University Act (Amendment) 1998, no private universities or local campuses of foreign universities either be set up or run their academic activities without necessary licenses from the Bangladesh government.

Sources informed that, 4 private universities are running their outer campuses with HC stay order. Darul Ihsan University has 100 illegal outer campuses in different areas of Bangladesh. Moreover, Atish Dipankar University of Science & Technology (ADUST) has illegal outer campuses at Uttara, Mirpur-1, Panthapath, Dhanmondi & Purana Paltan.

The illegal campuses of the People's University of Bangladesh are in Paltan, Badda & Uttara. International Islamic University of Chittagong is running illegal outer campus in Dhaka without approval of UGC. Northern University is running two outer campuses in Rajshahi & Khulna, those aren't approved by UGC.

In the same way, BGC Trust University of Chittagong is running their illegal outer campus in the city. Same complain raised against Southern University of Chittagong and IBAIS University in Dhaka.
