Canada is one of the happiest countries in the world, according to a global ranking of well-being that uses measures such as life expectancy and corruption to assess the progress of nations.

Canada ranks sixth in the United Nations' second world happiness report. That's down a notch from the last ranking - not because Canadians are any less happy, but because Switzerland leapfrogged into the top five. Denmark tops the list, followed by Norway.

Canadian people are incredibly content with their current lives and the direction that they're heading in. Canadians have one of the highest life expectancy's in the world, live in one of the safest of all countries, and have a top performing education system. Plus, 80% of all residents say that they enjoy more positive experiences than negative in the average day.

Canada's per capita disposable income exceeded $30,000, and the net financial wealth of its residents exceeded $63,000, both among the highest figures of any nation measured by the OECD. However, high income and wealth alone do not explain residents' happiness. In fact, the U.S. outperformed Canada in both measures, yet ranked just 17th in life satisfaction.

Account BenefitNotably, while just 90% of Americans said they had someone they could rely on in an emergency - a measure used by the OECD to gauge the quality of communities - in Canada 94% said they had such a person, among the most of any nation. Canadians were also more likely to be working and less likely to be unemployed, than their counterparties in the U.S., which also may contribute to residents' higher evaluations of their lives.
