Excessive fees for HSC exam

A number of educational institutions in the city are charging far higher fees than the mandatory amount set by the education boards on the students - to appear for the HSC exams.

These institutions have introduced 'mandatory' coaching and 'special classes' for HSC examinees to justify the extra charge, even after the boards on December 11, 2014 cautioned educational institutions with threat of stern action if they taken fees more than the amount fixed.

The college authorities, meanwhile, claimed the extra amount was 'tuition' for the period until the publication of results, model tests, development fees, farewell programs etc. The HC had issued on November 10, 2014 asking them not to charge any extra money from the candidates of HSC examinations other than the standard fees fixed by the education boards.

The Dhaka City College, Mirpur University College, Kings College, is directly charging more than the amount fixed by the board. Inter-Education board and Dhaka education board chairman Dilara Hafij told that action would be taken against educational institutions that are charging extra fees, if any complaints are lodged. If the allegations are proved, steps will certainly be taken against the people responsible.

The HSC exams are scheduled to begin in April 2014. About one million students are expected to take the exams. Boards have fixed Tk. 1,715 to Tk. 1,595 as exams fees for humanities, commerce and science students. Registration for examinations in schools began on Wednesday and it will continue till December 28, without late fees.

Udayan Higher Secondary School is charging Tk. 9,000 including tuition fee, Dhaka Residential Model College is charging Tk. 6,800 for tuition fee till June besides Tk. 2,300 for board fee, Holy Cross School and College fixed Tk. 7,800 as tuition fees till June besides normal board fee, Ideal School and College is charging Tk. 2,075 as board fee and Tk. 7,200 for tuition fees till June. Kings College has set the form-filling fees over Tk. 20,000, Dhaka City College is charging Tk. 11,650 and Mirpur University College is charging Tk. 10,000, including tuition and others fees, claimed guardians of students enrolled with the institutions.

Meanwhile, Monipur School and College is reportedly charging Tk. 3,000 for form-filling, including mandatory coaching fees and are also set to charge tuition fees till June 2015. Ideal School and College principal Shahan Ara claimed that they are not charging extra money from HSC candidates.
