Massive business of coaching centers

A massive business of Tk. 2600 crore are occurred in the coaching centers all over the Bangladesh. Undergraduate admission tests are running in the public universities. Getting admission to a university of the students choice is the priority for now.

Such is the competition to get into the top higher academic institutions that students often cannot imagine getting admission on their own. So admission seekers' rush to coaching centers has already began, while many are still sifting through the brochures of various coaching centers to check out what suits their needs and pockets best.

Admission tests in medical colleges, engineering universities and other public universities are getting tougher every year, with the number of applicants going up and seats remaining limited.

According to a University Grants Commission (UGC) report, there are about 44,000 seats in the country's 36 public universities except National University and Open University. And in 2014, the number of students securing A+ in this year's HSC and equivalent examinations was 1,42,274 alone. It is highly likely that the figure of A+ achievers will increase further this year. So one can only imagine how stiff the admission tests will be.

For many, the tests come as the culmination of months and even years of cramming, coaching and some sort of a restricted lifestyle. All these are worthwhile, however, given the stiff competition. And most importantly it is a deciding hour for the higher education seekers.

So the general belief among many students and their parents is that with a stint with a coaching center, they stand a better chance. And parents are ready to pay extra bucks to hone their children's skills before appearing for the tests. Capitalizing on the admission tests, hundreds of couching centers have mushroomed across the country.

Account BenefitCoaching centers provide both specialized and general courses. And some well-known centers take entrance examinations to check the level of students and categorize them into batches. "Every student does not have the same learning capacity. So a batch selection test is important because it helps the teachers know the level of students and thus they can teach them accordingly," said Abdullah al Mamun, a teacher of UCC.

However, many admission seekers allege that cashing in on the moment, the coaching centers are charging them huge amount of money. Imtiaz Uddin, who admitted in the UCC, said: "I want to get admitted into Dhaka University and I believe that coaching will help me to learn the required techniques to crack the DU admission test. But I had to pay Tk. 18,000 for 2/3 months of coaching. It is unacceptable."

Though it seems the flow of the students in coaching centers is endless. An official of the Uniaid coaching center said: "We have 10 branches in Dhaka city and more than 50 branches around the country. All the batches of city branches are almost filled up."

The wheels of all admission tests will be set in motion after Eid. So it is high times for all admission-seekers to fix their specific courses of action for the coming days.
