CU Teachers Observe One-hour Work Abstention

One-hour work abstention at CU

Chittagong University Teachers' Association (CUTA) observed a one-hour work abstention as part of their protest program on September 14, 2014.

CUTA on September 14, 2014 announced the one-hour strike from 11:30 am everyday for four days beginning from today demanding punishment of the attackers on the CU teachers.

CUTA President Professor Benu Kumar Dey said that the teachers spontaneously observed the work abstention. Examinations remain, however, out of the purview of the work abstention program, the CUTA President added.

CU Proctor Siraj-ud-Dowllah said presence of students on the campus was very thin but regular classes and examinations were held as per reschedule. At least 14 people including nine teachers of CU were injured when the striking students, allegedly the activists of Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS), lobbed crude bombs targeting two university buses carrying faculty members at Chhorarkul area of Hathazari on September 10, 2014 morning.

Account BenefitCampus sources said CU unit of ICS under the banner of general students enforced the indefinite general strike on the campus demanding reopening of Suhrawardi Hall and Shah Amanat Hall, which were closed following clashes between ICS and Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activists.

The following day, the university authorities closed the hall for an indefinite period. Besides, Shah Amanat Hall was shut earlier as police sealed off the Shibir-dominated dormitory following a fierce clash between BCL and ICS activists on January 12, 2014 which left a student dead.
