Medical College Owners to Reduce the Admission Test Pass-Mark
The government decision to set 40 marks as the pass-mark for written admission tests of private medical and dental colleges may end up causing the educational institutes to not get enough students for its MBBS and BDS courses in the current academic session, college authorities have raised concerns.
Organization of the owners of Private Medical Colleges, Bangladesh Private Medical College Association trying to reduce the pass-mark. Association leaders demands to reduce the pass-mark of entrance exam from 40 to 25 in a meeting at the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
Officials from several colleges said they feared that around 30%-40% seats in the private medical colleges and 70%-75% in the private dental colleges may remain vacant in the 2014-15 session, following the government decision to set 40 as the minimum requirement for qualifying in the 100-mark written admission test.
Earlier, only those who got a minimum of 120 out of 200 marks (100 marks based on their combined SSC and HSC results, and the rest on their written test) were eligible for admission.

Account BenefitDr. Zafrullah Chowdhury, a trustee of Gonoshasthya Kendra, suggested a two-pronged solution: lifting the minimum requirement of having combined GPA 8 from SSC-HSC results for sitting in the written exams, and introducing a psychological aptitude test to select candidates.
Asked about the move, Health Secretary MM Niazuddin said that the decision was made by the recommendation of the Deans Committee of Dhaka University. Through this system, the meritorious students would have a better chance for admission, he added.
However, health sector insiders said a large number of students might now be prompted to go abroad to study, instead of choosing local medical colleges.
Top officials from different private medical and dental colleges said that they might have to shut down their institutions, as not getting enough students admitted would result in irreparable financial damages for them.
