Dhaka University Observed Its 48th Convocation Amid Festivity
Dhaka University (DU) observed its 48th convocation conferring degrees to over 8'000 graduates and post-graduates from 73 disciplines amid festivity.
President and Chancellor of the university Abdul Hamid conferred them with the certificates among the recipients as clad in traditional dark black gowns, ties and hats, they entered the convocation venue at the central playground of the campus parading from the Curzon Hall premises.
The chancellor himself joined the convocation procession accompanied by Vice Chancellor Professor AAMS Arefin Siddique and senior fellows of the university ahead of the main ceremony which began with the signing of the national anthem and recitation from holy books.
Dhaka University this year invited director general of European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN) Rolf Dieter Heuer as the convocation speaker while it adorned the scientist with the Doctor of Science degree. "We have to make our students educated in profession-based conventional and non-conventional education to face world competition in all branches of knowledge and science", the chancellor said. "We need such education that can create creative and enlightened people, not the certificate-oriented education or the kind of education which rely on reading of textbooks and memorizing guide books. I hope the education will become the open window for the locked chamber of darkness and superstition", he added.
Heuer in his speech said the former fellows of the Dhaka University scientist Professor Satyan Bose earned for the institution high prestige in international arena in the past. The great Bengali scientist joined Dhaka University in 1921, he joined as Reader of the department of Physics while, the class of particles that obey Bose-Einstein statistics, "boson" was named after him. "We often ask why Bose was not given the Nobel Prize", said Heuer, who himself is a leading experimental particle physicist.

Account BenefitThe Vice-Chancellor in his speech identified lack of standard in the pre-university level of education saying the lack of job opportunity prompt many to get enrolled in universities with lesser quality causing pressures on the higher seat of education.
"The phenomenon could not be good for education, this results in generation of people with no employment. Many would have remained unemployed to be regarded as "higher secondary jobless person, now they are becoming post graduate unemployed", Siddique said. Pro-Vice Chancellor (administration) Professor Shahid Akhtar Hossain and Pro-Vice Chancellor (academic) Professor Nasreen Ahmed and Treasurer Professor Kamal Uddin attended the convocation conducted by acting Registrar Syed Rezaur Rahman.
A total of 8312 students, 4015 male and 4297 female, were conferred graduation, post graduation and Ph.D degrees. A total of 34 students received gold medals for their outstanding results while 38 Ph.D, 25 M.Phil and 34 MD-MS degrees were conferred in the convocation.
