Teachers Indefinite Strike at BAU

The pro-BNP-Jamaat teachers of Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) went on an indefinite strike on Sunday, protesting the threat given by a Chhatra League leader and irregularities in the recruitment of teachers and employees.

The decision of strike was taken at a general meeting of Sonali Dal, the BNP-Jamaat-backed teachers' association, on Sunday morning, said a press release.

On the other hand, general students of different faculties protested the decision of the opposition-backed teachers.

On October 24, 2013 Aminul Islam Selim, vice-president of Mymensingh city unit BCL, pushed Professor Dr. Md. Abul Hashem, General Secretary of Sonali Dal, by a motorbike while he along with some other teachers of the association stood in front of the BAU administration building. The local ruling party man also engaged in scuffle with some teachers and threatened them to take revenge in future.

Protesting the incident, over hundred teachers of Sonali Dal brought out a silent procession at around 12 noon from the Microbiology department and paraded important streets on the campus.

They announced to boycott classes and examinations, including upcoming admission tests.

"We will continue the boycott until the BCL leader was brought to book and the appointments of BAU faculties and employees, who were recruited in last five years violating the rules and regulations, were cancelled," said Professor Abul Hashem.

"We will stage a sit-in in front of the administrative building tomorrow (Monday)," he added.

General students urged the teachers to withdraw their strike and conduct classes and examinations for the sake of them.
