UODA Seminar on Nanomedicine

A seminar on 'Smart Biomaterials as Nanomedicine' was held at University of development Alternative (UODA), Dhanmondi campus on June 1, 2013.

Dr. Mohammad Ariful Islam, former student of Department of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering of University of Development Alternative (UODA), awarded the most prestigious Korean International 'Brain Korea Award', the highest award for scientific achievement, presented his valuable work at the seminar.

Vice Chancellor of UODA, Professor Dr. Emajuddin Ahamed inaugurated the seminar.

The main message of his seminar was how to deliver drugs or genes efficiently to its target site. Usually when drugs are taken orally it passes through the stomach, interacts with the digestion system and hence loses its efficiency of absorption.

Similarly, if drugs are administered parenterally also do not get absorbed efficiently. So, scientists are now trying to invent innovative ways of delivering drugs to its targeted site by making nanoparticles.

This method can also be used for gene therapy in case of the presence of any defective genes. Here the drug or the gene is complexed with suitable polymers which can reach to its targeted site avoiding the barriers, like entrance of the drug into the cell, avoiding its breakdown by the lysosomal enzymes, and then correctly transferred to its targeted site, be it nucleus or cytoplasm.

Such findings were presented in a seminar at University of Development Alternative (UODA) in Dhaka, where Dr. Islam discussed about the new method of treating diseases through 'Nanomedicine'.

The Department of Biotechnology & Genetic Engineering and Department of Molecular Medicine & Bioinformatics jointly organized the seminar.

Dr. Islam has published a number of papers on nanomedicine in reputed journals. In the seminar Dr Islam mentioned about different biodegradable material likes chitosan, polysorbitol, alginate, and Eudralgit that can be used to deliver drug in the target organ, and which he found had less side effect and showed impressive results.

He also mentioned that small interference RNA (SiRNA) is a very useful tool for treating genetic diseases.
