South Asian University of SAARC
The South Asian University is an International University sponsored by the eight Member States of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC). Dr. Manmohan Singh, Prime Minister of India mooted the idea of establishing a South Asian University (SAU) at the 13th SAARC Summit in Dhaka in 2005.
After that, A SAARC Steering Committee was constituted to oversee the establishment of SAU. Now the SAARC Steering Committee has completed its work and the Rules, Regulations, Academic Structure and Business. A temporary campus has been set up in space provided by the Jawaharlal Nehru University. An international design competition for the permanent SAU campus is under way.
Bangladeshi students now have the opportunities for higher study in South Asian University. There are 66 quotas which is 10% of all for Bangladeshi students. Applications were invited for admission to various Academic Programmes offered by the South Asian University in its third academic session to commence from July 2012. Following courses are currently available in SAU - M.A. (International Relations), M.Sc. (Biotechnology), M.A. (Sociology), M.Sc. (Computer Science), Master of Computer Applications (MCA), M.Sc. (Applied Mathematics), Master of Law (LLM).
There are variations in the duration of bachelor degree programs in the SAARC Region. For admission to the Master level programs in SAU, a minimum of 15 years education (culminating into a Bachelor Degree of minimum 3-years duration) is needed. Students who have done 4-year bachelor degree after 12th Class Schooling, are also eligible though the master level program at SAU will be of 2 years duration for all. Students who have done 12 years of Schooling followed by 2-years bachelor degree (total 14 years), are not eligible for admission to Master level programs at SAU.
However, students who have done 2-year bachelor degree and thereafter have also completed 1st year of M.A./M.Sc., can be considered for admission to a Master level course at SAU subject to their fulfillment of other prescribed eligibility conditions including percentage of marks by calculating combined average of marks obtained in bachelor degree and 1st year of M.A./M.Sc. course.
The Final Year students who have not yet completed bachelor’s degree, and shall be appearing for their last year / semester exam for bachelor’s degree, may also apply for admission to master degree programmes and appear in the entrance examination. However, in case selected, their admission will be subject to their fulfillment of the minimum prescribed eligibility criteria including aggregate percentage of marks in their bachelor’s degree.
Admission to SAU will be through an entrance test that will be held simultaneously in all SAARC countries, scheduled for May 27, 2012. Admission fee is $100 (non-refundable), Tuition fee is $440 (per semester), & have to provide money for security fund which is $100 (non-refundable).
Declaration of Results (on website) will be on June 16, 2012. The Deadline for admission registration without late fee on July 31, 2012 & with late fee on August 14, 2012. The Commencement of academic session will be on July 26, 2012.
