Importance of Spanish Learning

Spanish is the second-most natively spoken language in the world with around 329 million native speakers. It is slightly ahead of English (328 million) but far behind Mandarin Chinese (1.2 billion).

Spanish is also known as Castilian, due to its origins in the Castile region of Spain. It is the official language of Spain. It has also been spoken across the Central and South American countries which were once Spanish colonies. In USA, which has grown to be a multicultural society over the years, it is the second most spoken language.

In Africa, Spanish is spoken in Equatorial Guinea and the disputed territory of the Western Sahara. In Asia, there are still remnants of the language in the Philippines. Moreover, it is an official language of the UN and its institutions, the European Union and some other international organizations.

If you know English well, then you will already be able to recognize more than 3,000 Spanish words! English and Spanish share many words which are of Latin origin. For example, most English words ending in -tion end in –ción: atención, publicación, liberación in Spanish.

There are also loanwords in English which have the Spanish origin, including tornado, bonanza or patio. In addition, you will find many familiar American place names, dating back to the time of the Conquistadors: Los Ángeles, City of Angels, Las Vegas, the Dales, Nevada, Snowy Land, Florida, Flowery and, yes, Amarillo, the Spanish for Yellow, etc.

Much of the vocabulary of English has Latin origins, much of which came to English by way of French. Since Spanish is also a Latin language, you will find as you study Spanish that you have a better understanding of your native vocabulary. Similarly, both Spanish and English share Indo-European roots, so their grammars are similar. There is perhaps no more effective way to learn English grammar than by studying the grammar of another language, for the study forces you to think about how your language is structured. It's not unusual, for example, to gain an understanding of English verbs' tenses and moods by learning how those verbs are used in Spanish.

Spanish is generally thought of as one of the easiest languages to be learnt. It is a phonetic language, i.e. the way it is written is exactly the way it is pronounced, with no notable variance.

The biggest differences in grammar include the use of gender, agreement and a more extensive verb conjugation with six different ends in each tense.

The distinction between the Spanish spoken in Spain and Latin American Spanish mainly lies in the pronunciation and intonation but that does not hamper communication.
