Public varsities lacking in research

Most among the 35 public universities are reluctant to arrange scientific research, although it is considered most important part of higher studies.

Academics said students of public universities are being deprived of acquiring fresh knowledge due to negligence on part of teachers in conducting research.

A recent report of the University Grants Commission reveals that about 15 universities had not taken any research projects in 2011 while ten universities took projects which were on paper only as they undertook one to 10 projects.

"Research at universities is needed to ensure creation of new knowledge and national development. No university can ensure delivery of quality education without research. Teachers should have only two tasks - taking class and doing research", said noted educationist Professor Dr. Harun-or-Rashid.

Dr. Harun, also Vice-Chancellor of the National University said that teachers would not be able to disseminate knowledge if they do not engage themselves in garnering knowledge through conducting studies. Urging the authorities concerned to boost research at university level, he said, "Teachers have to be keen on conducting research works for the sake of acquiring a standard level of knowledge".

The NU VC requested the government as well as the UGC authorities to allocate more funds for research and take initiatives for rewarding researchers to maintain quality of higher studies.

Some 15 public universities, including a number of reputed institutions, had not conducted even a single research projects in 2011, showed the UGC report. Underperforming universities are Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, Chittagong University, National University, Open University, Mawlana Bhasani University of Science and Technology, Sher-e-Bangla Agriculture University, Noakhali University of Science and Technology, Jagannath University, Comilla University, Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam University, Bangladesh University of Professionals, Pabna University of Science and Technology, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman University of Science and Technology, Bangladesh Textile University and Barisal University.

The report found that some universities like Barisal University, Bangladesh Textile University, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman University of Science and Technology, Pabna University of Science and Technology, Begum Rokeya University, Jessore University of Science and Technology, Sylhet Agriculture University and Comilla University did not spend even a single penny for the purpose the same year.
