Details of North South University

North South University (NSU) is the first private university in Bangladesh. The university was established by a group of people who was interested enough to arrange some additional means of education through which more students can educate themselves.

As the number of students for higher education is increasing more rapidly than the number of institutions, such thoughts were very appreciated by everybody.

Establishment History and Curriculum:
The Government of Bangladesh approved the establishment of North South University in 1992 under Private University Act (PUA) 1992. The university was formally inaugurated on 10th February 1993 by Begum Khaleda Zia the then Prime Minister of Bangladesh.

NSU has the authority, under its Charter, to impart instruction and confer undergraduate and graduate degrees in all branches of arts, business and sciences, including engineering, agriculture, law and medicine. It also has the authority to grant diplomas, certificates and other academic distinctions. Currently, NSU offers Bachelor's and Master's degrees in 29 subjects (15 Bachelor's degrees and 14 Master's degrees). Additional programs including Ph.D.in different subjects are under preparation.

The university follows the North American academic system with all its distinctive features-semesters, credit hours, letter grades, one examiner system and so on. Its curricula, when first introduced, were reviewed by relevant departments of University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, and University of California at Berkeley, USA, and duly approved by University Grants Commission, Bangladesh. The academic programs are continually updated and adapted to meet the changing needs country.

Professor Dr. Amin U. Sarkar, Vice-Chancellor is providing leadership in improving, expanding and diversifying various academic programs. NSU now has 329 core (fulltime) faculty members. All faculty members have higher degrees from reputable foreign universities, with over 90% holding degrees from British, American, Australian and Canadian universities. Visiting faculty members from foreign universities including US, UK, Canadian and Australian universities also teach at NSU. It is very selective in recruiting teachers and admitting students. Its current student enrolment is about 15,000.

The first freshman classes had 137 students enrolled in three Departments: Business Administration, Computer Science, and Economics. Department of Environmental Studies and Management (DESM), English and General and Continuing Education (GCE) were added in May 1997. The Master's program in Economics was introduced in 1994. The MBA program was launched in Summer 1997. Master's in Development Studies and Bachelor's in Computer Engineering were introduced in 2002 while MS in Computer Science is being offered from Summer 2003. Bachelor's in Architecture was introduced in Fall 2004. Master's in English was launched in Spring 2005. Pharmacy (Undergraduate) and Executive MBA programs came into being in Spring 2006 and Master's in Biotechnology and Master's in Public Health programs were started in Summer 2006. BS in Biotechnology, BS in Microbiology and BS in Biochemistry programs were introduced in Spring 2007. Master in Public Policy and Governance (MPPG) opened in Fall 2008, BS in Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE) and Master in Resources and Environmental Management (MREM) launched in Spring 2009 and Fall 2009 respectively. The university launched Executive Master in Public Health (EMPH) during Summer 2010, M.Pharm during spring 2012 and BS in Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEED) opened in Summer 2013.

NSU has three Institutes and one Center: (i) Institute of Development, Environment and Strategic Studies (IDESS) (ii) Institute of Modern Language (IML) (iii) Confucius Institute Chinese Language Institute, and (iv) Center of Information & Communication Technology (CICT).

Group Study at the Study Hall:
Today, the education life of a student studying in the university means not just reading table alone. It is not only difficulties of memorizing and unsuccessful effort to learn alone. But, the education in varsity life means- came out from the boredom of loneliness and study in groups with friends to find out the easy solution of difficult subjects.

In particular, such a tendency of group study can be seen more in the students who studying in a little difficult subjects. Group study in North South University is running in an ample study hall. The arrangement of group study can be seen in the hall.

Adda in Canteen, Plaza and Lounge:
Friends, adda and food are the three major elements that complete the life of most university going students in Bangladesh. Without the deadly combination of the trio, life would seem extremely dull, and us, Bangladeshis are not very receptive about the concept of monotony, particularly, when it comes to eating. Be it a public university or a private university, food seems to be the main attraction everywhere. In North South University (NSU), food not only has one face but like a chameleon, it changes color from one booth to another. For most students it almost seems like possessing Aladdin's genie lamp- you wish for a dish and voila, you have it!

A number of dishes are available at different booths, like Golpea Burger, Business Aid (NSU's original canteen), Magdonal's and Baghdad Hotel and Restaurant (in short, known as BH & R). Students at NSU come in at all hours of the day, so no specific breakfast, lunch or dinner menu is available per say. But then again, since the students have so many options, if they do want to catch an early morning breakfast before the 8 am class, they usually opt for the Business Aid booth. From here, they can choose from chicken rolls, egg rolls, chicken sandwiches, kebab rolls (occasionally available) or simply shingaras and samosas which are the most popular. At times, early morning classes can become really hectic. To help keep a clear mind, a good cup of tea and coffee is also available here at the legendary Mojo mama's corner.

Account BenefitLife in private universities like North South can be very demanding at times. But this should not, at any cost, stop students from exploring and enjoying the options available on campus. Specially, when it comes to food, even introverts are recommended to check out the canteen and try out the Aladdin's genie lamp!

Successful YES:
NSU YES is a corporate organization operated by the undergraduate programs students of North South University. This organization works for youth development and empowerment. NSU YES was started in 1994. It is a specialized club, which helps a student to dominate the commercial skills.

The club helps students gain the business knowledge through organizing various seminars, workshops and a variety of business competition. YES helps to get the concept of corporate world, inspiration for starters and to see the dream of a bright future. YES is currently being conducted with 121 students. In addition, YES also organizes various events. These are the Masters of Ideation, Add Maker Bangladesh, etc.

NSU Debating Club:
NSU Debating Club is the first student activity club at NSU which has brought national and international recognition to the university through student activities; NSU Debating club is the leading club in terms of earning competitive laurels against other institutions.

The missions and goals of this club are to promote the art of debating and public speaking among the students of the university, to train members in the art of reasoning and sharpening their logical thinking skills, to develop self-efficacy and confidence and to enhance the general knowledge base. Principal activities of this club are organizing Intra NSU Debates in both English and Bengali every year, Open Mike Seasons on various current issues, arranging workshops on Debates and organizing or helping in arranging various Inter University Debate Competitions.

NSU Library:
The NSU library has six floors with over 70,000 square feet (6,500 m2) floor area on the southeastern side of the campus. It is the first fully automated university library in Bangladesh using its own library management software, which supports RFID system, web-based online circulation system, full-text e-books and online journal article repository services. The library can accommodate over 1,200 students in its reading rooms. On average 2,000 students use the library every day.

As of August 2014, the library holds 49,500 books, 50,000 online books, 6,000 bound journals (Foreign and local) and magazines, 1,890 CD-ROM databases and books, 226 DVD and videos, 159 audio-cassettes, and other resources. It subscribes to 20 local journals, 18 foreign and 19 local magazines, two foreign dailies and most of the leading national dailies published from Dhaka. The NSU library is the pioneer of subscribing online journals and MyAthens in Bangladesh. It started subscription to online journals with JSTOR, IEEE, ACM Digital library and 39 titles of online journals in various disciplines for the first time in 2002. After that the other libraries started subscription to online journals in the country. Now it has access over 40,000 online journals of 52 publishers including Ebsco, Emerald, Blackwell, JSTOR, ACM, Oxford University Press, Wiley, Springer, ASCE and other major databases.

Cultural Activities in NSU:
North South University Sanskritik Sangathan, short name is NSUSS. Members of this organization are spend very hectic time for two-times a year. 1. When there is an event in near. 2. When there is no event in near! Responsibilities of all the cultural activities onerous of North South University are on the shoulder of this organization. Plans to host a variety of arrangement in between studies, management, rehearsal - hectic is not even less if there is no occasions.

Members of the organization went for group travel at the end of the semester. Sometimes Bandarban, sometimes Rangamati to try to shake off their extreme tiredness of class - assignment - examination. At the start of the years they have no leisure to breath by hosting more and more ceremonies. There are the big preparation like Pohela Falgun, Pohela Boishakh and different arrangements for the National days like 21st February, 26th March, and 16th December etc. However, the students of North South University are waiting for the ACE (Annual Cultural Evening) throughout the year.

Vice President of this organization, Abrar Faisal said, "We can't explain what the ACE to us". Many people think there will surely arranging the Concert-DJ etc at the Annual Cultural Evening of NSU. Simply the matter is not that. There is a unique theme for each ACE. The room number 1046 of the University is the dwelling place of NSUSS. Members of the organization going to the Club room in between classes from morning till evening. Dance-music-trial-chatting-banter continues. Singer Topu, Emil, Elita and many others were the active members of the family.
