Charyapada - Ancient Book of Bangla Literature Remembered in Chittagong

`Ka aa Torubar panch bi dal, chancel che e poitha kal` - means body is like a tree, whose restless mind will direct the fate of it, or `Je je aila, te te geila` - means those who have came, they have gone, such dialogues are from `Charyapada`.

`Charyapada` is the most archaic book of bangla literature. It is a collection of 8th-12th century Vajrayana Buddhist caryagiti, or mystical poems from the tantric tradition in eastern India. Being caryagiti (songs of realization), the Charyapada were intended to be sung. These songs of realization were spontaneously composed verses that expressed a practitioner's experience of the enlightened state. Miranda Shaw describes how caryagiti were an element of the ritual gathering of practitioners in a tantric feast. The feast culminates in the performance of tantric dances and music, that must never be disclosed to outsiders. The revelers may also improvise "songs of realization" (caryagiti) to express their heightened clarity and blissful raptures in spontaneous verse.

A manuscript of this anthology was discovered in the early 20th century. It provides the early examples of the Assamese, Oriya, Maithili and Bengali languages. The writers of the Charyapada, the Mahasiddhas or Siddhacharyas, belonged to the various regions of Assam, Bengal, Orissa and Bihar. A Tibetan translation of the Charyapada was also preserved in the Tibetan Buddhist canon. It is the earliest known example of Maithili poetry. According to Bengali scholar Haraprasad Shastri (1853–1931), Charyapada is also the collection of the oldest verses written in pre-Modern Bengali.

Recently `The society of arts, literature and welfare`, Chittagong organized a discussion meeting to discuss about `Charyapada`. Mr. Golam Mostafa, Associate Professor of Bangla Dept., CU was discussing about `Charyapada` and everybody was hearing it like magical fairy. They were hearing the sentences and descriptions in pin drop silence.
