Bachelor admission in BUET

The registration to sit for the BUET admission test closes. On this occasion, Nafis Irtiza, who stood first in the BUET admission test of 2012-13 suggests about the present conditions, admission procedures, eligibility criteria of BUET and, especially, how to prepare for the test.

Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, abbreviated as BUET, is one of the most prestigious institutions for higher studies in the country. About 5500 students are pursuing undergraduate and postgraduate studies in engineering, architecture, planning and science in this institution. At present, BUET has 16 departments under five faculties and has three institutes. A total of about five hundred teachers are teaching in these departments and institutes.

BUET is the oldest institution for the study of engineering and architecture in Bangladesh. Till today, it has produced around 25,000 graduates in different branches of engineering and architecture, and has established a good reputation in the academic circle for the quality of its graduates, many of whom have excelled in their profession in different parts of the globe. It has been able to attract students from countries like India, Nepal, Iran, Jordan, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Palestine.

Both undergraduate and postgraduate studies and research are now among the primary functions of the university. Eleven departments under five faculties offer Bachelor degrees, while most of the departments and institutes offer Master's degrees and some of the departments have Ph.D. programs too. In addition to its own research programs, the university undertakes research programs sponsored by outside organisations like European Union, UNO, Commonwealth, UGC, etc.

Eligibility: Students who want to sit for the admission test must have 4.00 out of a scale of 5.00 in their S.S.C or equivalent examinations. They must have GPA 5.00 in English, mathematics, physics and chemistry in H.S.C or equivalent examinations. Tribal students must meet the minimum eligibility criteria for candidacy.

Including 3 reserved seats in the engineering and urban and regional planning departments and 1 in architecture department for tribal students, there are 1000 available seats in total. Numbers of seats per department are given below:

Chemical Engineering (60), Material and Metallurgical Engineering (50), Civil Engineering (195), Water Resources Engineering (30), Mechanical Engineering (180), Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering (55), Industrial and Production Engineering (30), Electrical and Electronic Engineering (195), Computer Science and Engineering (120), Architecture (55), and Urban and Regional Planning (30).

Preparations:
For BUET admission test, more than anything, reading your books thoroughly is important. Go through them as carefully as possible. Make your concepts crystal clear, your understanding deeper, practice for hours and solve questions from previous years.

Instructors in coaching centers or private teachers can sometimes be helpful. They can help you understand a theory or solve a certain problem. You can learn some easy ways to solve problems too. But always remember, in admission test, there will be no questions except from your textbooks.

Do's and Don'ts:
Students are suggested to look over all the problems of maths in the books. If some thinks they cannot solve by looking at them they should do them by hand. Then finish all admission test questions from previous years. And that will be all, he added".

The biggest challenge in the BUET admission test is not to have enough knowledge about the subjects, it's about keeping everything you learned in your head when required, because the tension building up around may make you forget important things. The key is to have a good sleep the night before, and go to the exam hall well-rested. If students revise only what they had learnt for their HSC exams, they have a good shot at scoring big.
