DU Day Celebration Rally

The 92nd founding anniversary of Dhaka University (DU), launched in 1921, was celebrated with great enthusiasm and festivity yesterday. It was a special day for all the present and former students of this highest seat of education of the country. But in retrospect, we see much of the lustre DU had in its early days has been lost by now. It pains us all that once popularly known as the Oxford of the East, Dhaka University now does not exist in the list of top 500 universities of the world.

Multifarious problems have contributed to this downgrade. Research is a hallmark of higher education. But Dhaka University is now conducting less research than it ought to. Once was a rendezvous of scholarly people, scholars are not emerging from the university up to our expectation because of the inadequate research. Many teachers of DU like to spend their time and energy at private universities and in consultancy depriving their own students through duty dodging. And to exacerbate the situation a section of the teachers of the university who go abroad on education leave often do not return. All these contribute to long session jam at some departments of DU.

The teachers and students of this university were at the forefront of movements during every critical juncture of politics in the creation of Bangladesh and in establishing democracy in the country after the liberation; but now the influence of partisan politics is greatly hampering the academic, administrative and other internal activities of the university. The University Act 1973 was introduced to give the university teachers autonomy so that they can protect their freedom of thought and opinion. This autonomy is now being used to shield the university teachers from accountability.

We think there should be a system of accountability of the teachers and administrative staff of Dhaka University. If for this, a review of some of the provisions of the University Act is needed, the government should not hesitate to do that. We also think that the pay structure of the university teachers should be reasonable enough so that they are not lured by private universities or consultancy farms.
