Social media has several effects on academic work - some more positive than others. There are some truly great benefits that come from students and teachers being friends on Facebook (FB). One of these benefits is that it allows teachers to more easily reach their students. Students are more likely to learn from someone they trust, like, and can relate to. Here is a story for you -

"Sir, thank you very much for your time. I am concerned that the way cracks developed in the new building of Suhasini Das Hall it might collapse any day like Rana Plaza. I am drawing your kind attention." This is how Gayotri Sunanda, a student of Sylhet Agricultural University (SAU) expressed her concern in the facebook page of the university. Moments later, Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dr. Shahid Ullah Talukdar replied: "I'll visit soon. Don't worry."

In an unprecedented move the VC took to the popular social networking site facebook on May 1, 2013 to have a live discussion with the students. The chat was scheduled for one hour, from 5-6pm on that day. But having their VC online students responded such overwhelmingly that the chat moved way past the scheduled time.

However, VC is in trouble (!) giving answers of all questions of students. Thousands of questions have already been inboxed! Encouraged students are questioning the VC, urging to solve their problems and VC is trying to reply to every student's message. This is the first time in Bangladesh, a university VC took such move to communicate with the students. Faysal Khalilur Rahman, a student of SAU took the main initiative.

Hasanuzzaman Himu: A rich library, modern auditorium, separate health centre, post office, teachers and students centre, Mosque and playing field are needed.

VC: We have only 50 acres of land. Moreover, the land is uneven so all of it cannot be used. We are in talk with the government and hope that the problems will be solved soon.

Ahmed Nuhit: Wi-Fi Internet connection on campus is needed urgently.

VC: ICT project is underway. The whole campus would be brought into Wi-Fi zone within two months.

Oishi Hamom: Sir, I am speaking from the 'gono' room of Suhasini Das Hall. We around 60 girls live here. But there is no favourable condition for studying in here. Do something for us.

VC: I understand your sufferings. Give me one year time. A 200 seated hall for girls in the making.

Kishore Kumar Sarker: Sir I would very much like to know about what you do in leisure time.

VC: I read a lot, especially socio political aspects and contemporary subjects and read newspapers.

Mosud Ahmed Liton: A lot of buildings on campus were built filling ponds. Be careful.

VC: We are concerned about this matter. We have already ordered the engineering section to look into the stability of all buildings, especially the fisheries building which is under construction.

On the facebook page (www.facebook.com/SylhetAgriculturalUniversity) there were hundreds of such questions and comments and the VC painstakingly responded to all. After the chat the VC himself was delighted. As he said: "In our times there were no such facilities.
